Tanzanian singer Brian Xavi teams up with Malkia Zuuh for “Zanzibar,” a colorful Bongo Flava and traditional fusion tune that connects two regional musical identities.

It’s a sound thing as much as a geography thing. Brian Xavi draws on Kigoma’s rhythmic musical history, while the Zanzibar allusion adds coastal East African cultural identity within the same space.

It’s the entire creative basis for the record — two regional musical realms colliding within one Bongo Flava creation of today. It’s that specificity that makes the song so unique.

Malkia Zuuh’s vocals give the fusion a sense of lived-in rather than contrived. Her delivery supports Brian Xavi’s performance throughout without taking the record away from its traditional roots.

So both artists share the song’s identity, rather than compete for it. Fusion albums only succeed when the collaboration is really mutual – and “Zanzibar” pulls that off all the way.
