South African Maskandi band Royal Messengers drop the title single “iFoni kaDali” off their studio project IFONI KA DALI, a culturally grounded and thought-provoking record.
This old-fashioned record comes at a time when aficionados of indigenous music are looking for melody-driven Zulu folklore that combines acoustic virtuosity with witty modern social commentary. Royal Messengers continues to demand substantial esteem within the Maskandi landscape for its use of real instrumentation to address current relational difficulties. In this defining cut, the group examines modern communication failures, investigating the fear, distrust, and friction that come from a partner being too protective of their cell phone.
The production is set against a rhythmic backdrop, with melodic concertina phrases, delicate acoustic guitar fingerpicking, and rolling indigenous basslines. Resonant Zulu vocals swirl over the mid-tempo beat with seamless elegance and conviction.
