Culturally based Maskandi outfit Royal Messengers from South Africa have released a thought-provoking tune named “Online” off their studio project IFONI KA DALI.
It is a traditional release, at a time when indigenous music listeners are in search of acoustic Zulu folklore that addresses contemporary life challenges with comedy and moral clarity. Royal Messengers still commands stout esteem across the Maskandi landscape for employing authentic instrumentation to dissect present social issues. On “Online,” the group takes a close look at social media culture and virtual presence, delving into the numerous distractions, vanity and emotional distance that come when couples spend all day locked on the internet.
The production builds an organic backdrop with melodic concertina themes, delicate acoustic guitar fingerpicking and rolling indigenous basslines. Resonant Zulu vocals sail with unforced ease and confidence over the mid-tempo beat.
