Mbekezeli 1010 – Wawukhona Nini
Mbekezeli 1010, a South African traditional Maskandi singer and expressive storyteller, presents a deeply rooted, culturally rich record titled “Wawukhona Yini” from his studio project Lawufaka Ilunda.
The sound architects build an organic, mid-tempo canvas based around complex acoustic guitar fingerpicking, incisive percussive shakers, and melodic concertina phrases. The traditional groove is layered with a smooth, rolling indigenous bassline that keeps you bouncing but not so much that it drowns out the live instruments. Meanwhile, the clean sound engineering allows for plenty of breathing room so that every vocal nuance, native cadence, and layered backing harmony cuts cleanly across the mix.
Mbekezelaji 1010 is commanding the record with his signature textured delivery and seasoned vocal poise. He masters the tempo with ease, adding real passion to his native Zulu lines and creating a strong, determined, and reflective mood from the first drop. His earnest delivery and dynamic pitch control lend the performance a grounded, chant-like gravity that keeps the listener hooked every bar.
The lyricism of “Wawukhona Yini” (loosely translating to “Were You There?”) is largely based on questioning true loyalty, remembering who was there for him in the hard times and staying strong on his path against haters. With poignant proverbs and relatable Zulu storytelling, he turns personal grievance and resilience into an empowering, universally comforting anthem for dreamers and lovers of traditional music of all generations.
This release flows everything well for a full, very satisfying listen. The rich, acoustic-led production keeps pace with his expressive vocal energy all the way through the entire runtime.
