South African traditional Maskandi outfit and expressive storytellers Amabongwa kick off their studio EP Umuntu with a deeply rooted, culturally rich record called “Iyagqilaza.”
“Iyagqilaza” is a song that is heavily reliant on the lyricism of surviving the everyday grind of life, surviving profound distress, fighting despair, and taking strength from ancestral roots. They use poignant proverbs and relatable storytelling in Zulu to turn personal vulnerability and the sting of heavy burdens into a universally comforting anthem for dreamers and lovers of traditional music across generations.
Everything here works together perfectly to provide a complete, deeply satisfying listening experience across this release. The rich, acoustic-led production keeps pace with their expressive vocal energy every step of the way through the whole runtime.
