Tanzanian recording artist, Malume, has dropped a new tune on love and the emotional weight of relationships, “Mapenzi”.
Malume treats the subject with steady vocal energy, employing rapid language that swings between frustration and resignation. The tension between vulnerability and social pressure is throughout the entire record.
Malume is no stranger to complicated relationships either. His portfolio includes “Unadunda Moyo” with Bazo Jini, signaling a continued interest in songs that explore emotional and interpersonal themes. “Mapenzi” takes that a step further and adds to a superb discography that has been constantly increasing in the Tanzanian Bongo Flava scene.
His harsh inflection remains in place, giving the song some real edge even at its most introspective. There’s no sense of anything being rushed or half-assed here.
From an artist that holds East African audiences captive with down-to-earth, accessible storytelling, “Mapenzi” is a natural part of the continuum.
