South African traditional Maskandi outfit Royal Messengers drops a culturally rooted and thought-provoking tune named “Yeka iCellphone” off their studio project IFONI KA DALI.
This is a traditional CD that comes at a time when listeners of indigenous music are looking for acoustic Zulu folklore that addresses issues of contemporary life with comedy and moral clarity. Royal Messengers has gained serious recognition throughout the Maskandi scene for their use of real traditional instrumentation to address modern social problems. On this cut, the ensemble, tongue-in-cheek, looks at the distractions of the digital era, begging partners to put down their mobile devices and engage in actual human contact.
The production provides a rhythmic base propelled by melodic concertina melodies, complex acoustic guitar fingerpicking, and rolling bass rhythms. The mid-tempo beat features resonant Zulu voices that deliver their lines with natural composure and passion.
