South African producer DJ Maphorisa teams up with DJ Tunez, Wizkid, Daliwonga, and Madumane on “Abangani,” a highlight from their collaboration “South Gidi” EP.
The record was released on October 24, 2025, and it is the second song on the 3-track project that links Lagos and Johannesburg.
The title translates to “friends” or “homies,” and that notion of brotherhood is all throughout the song. The producer opts out of a big club drop and instead opts for gentle Amapiano sounds with floating layers of Afro-fusion. Beneath a spacious bass end are soft keys and soothing percussion that provide the tune a reflective, communal sense rather than a frenetic one. The move is in keeping with the broader goal of the EP, which was made to honor the coming together of two major African music scenes, ‘South Gidi’
Wizkid flies over the groove with the effortless energy he is known for, delivering lyrical lines that sound easy rather than forced. Daliwonga underpins the verse work with a deep and soulful voice, while Madumane adds a textured, raw edge that keeps the duet grounded. DJ Tunez on the transitions and vocal layering; he stitches together the South African and Nigerian aspects without letting either side dominate each other. The chemistry works because each performer has a job instead of overwhelming the mix.
The reason to come back to “Abangani” is that it encompasses the whole spirit of the project. The “South Gidi” EP was born during studio sessions in London in September 2025, and the record sounds like a genuine dialog across boundaries, not a manufactured crossover. It’s not trying to be the biggest anthem on the track list. Rather, it is a warm, consolidated moment that remains when the beat subsides.
