October 2026: “Expectations,” a synth-pop collaboration with Chappell Roan, is released via Interscope Records. The music pairs the two pop icons with a new perspective on relationship difficulties, blending retro-inspired production with lyrics about refusing to accept less than one deserves.
The song was written by Rodrigo and Roan with Amy Allen and produced by Dan Nigro with Mike Wise as co-producer. It takes its cues from ’80s synth-pop and dance music, providing an enthusiastic setting for the artists’ different vocal styles.
The second stanza is one of the highlights of the song, with Roan lending her take on the theme of let down romantic encounters. With a cheeky reference to dating a lady who doesn’t match expectations, she turns the song on its head, adding a unique spin to the duet while keeping the essence of the song intact.
Additionally, “Expectations” is an official musical collaboration between the lifelong friends, allowing both singers to put their identities onto a record they share. The new album, you look very sad for a girl so in love, is out now alongside the release of Rodrigo’s third studio album.
