Tanzanian dance music veterans Twanga Pepeta have released a lovely new tune “Mpenzi Wangu” that revolves around love, affection and connection. The Swahili title means “My Lover” and the whole song fits right in that place.
For years Twanga Pepeta have been developing their own particular Tanzanian dance-music character. This one carries on that tradition and dives headlong into the emotional area.
The production is warm and dancey, staying faithful to the band’s characteristic sound throughout. There is no urgency to any of it, or to the feeling underlying the words.
‘Mpenzi Wangu’ succeeds because it fully commits to that vulnerable, devoted tone from the very beginning to the very end. Nothing here seems hurried or designed for impact.
